From all reports received, this was another wonderful Vanguard Holiday Dinner. Held at the Collonade, once again the food was said to be excellent and especially nice was the entertainment.

Thanks to Bill Siebert and his committee for their hard work pulling this together. Great job!

Goodbye to a friend...

It is with great sadness that I report that Vanguard has lost another of its members. Patty Potter passed away Monday night after a long illness. She fought her illness valiantly and courageously and remained a positive force in the lives of those she touched. She was a wonderful woman and artist and will be missed.

Norma Cox Miller

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of long time Vanguard artist, Norma Cox Miller. We will miss her wonderful contemporary art, but more importantly we will miss having her within our art community.

Norma was a true southern lady, with a gentle spirit and kind soul. For those of us who pray, we thank God for her presence in our lives and are thankful her passing was a gentle one.

We wish her husband, Glen, the very best and send healing thoughts his way.

Kristi Herring and Mary Lou Harvey are currently displaying their lovely and fun paintings at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West, at the northeast corner of Meeker and R.H. Johnson. Do stop by and have a look.

Kristi reports that they were present during last Sunday's after-services social hours and enjoyed very much visiting with the congregation members.

Julie Gilbert Pollard

At the March meeting of Vanguard Artists, we were honored to have Julie Gilbert Pollard share her techniques for painting both oils and watercolors. She begins both of these projects by blocking in the darkest shapes to anchor them and then continues on painting either in oil or watercolor over the underpainting. Very interesting! The results she shared with us were a testament for that approach working well for her!

Sorry Folks!

As your Blog Administrator, one of my responsibilities is to create the slideshows of our work for easy access to them. To do this, I utilize a Pro Account through Flickr, which is paid for by Vanguard Artists. I haven't checked my mail through Flickr for awhile, which means I didn't read the notice that our Pro Account was due to expire in February, so it didn't get paid. This is why some of our painting photos have disappeared, Flickr downgraded us to the free account, which limits the number of photos we can have on their site. Mea culpa!

I have paid the fee for the Pro Account and I will hope to have our photos all restored shortly. If not, I will re-create the slideshows as I have most of the photos I have been sent stored on my computer.

Pardon me for my lapse!

Passing Along Good News!

As your blog administrator, it is with great pride that I announce that Kristi Herring sold three paintings based on paintings she has shown here, on our blog! She added some paintings to her member slideshow and then sent e-mails to her contacts, friends and family announcing her slideshow gallery was available for viewing; along with the link to get there on the blog. This is a perfect example of how I would like this blog to work for all of us!

Just send your painting photos to me as you complete them, I will add them to the blog and then let your contacts know they are there.

Also, another painting was sold from the Vanguard display at the Professional Building, this time by Pat Knorr. Congratulations to both Pat and Kristi and to those who purchased their paintings and will enjoy them in their homes!

Let's all make a resolve to display our work at these successful venues, they are working for us!

From Judy Lawson via Susan

Dear All,

Guess what? You never have to feel guilty about not forwarding an email again!! Please read the info below from snopes.com. You will be glad you did! It isn't long,

The man that sent this information is a computer tech. He spends a lot of time clearing the junk off computers for people and listens to complaints about speed. All forwards are not bad, just some. Be sure you read the very last paragraph.

Please read :

By now, I suspect everyone is familiar with www.snopes.com and/or www.truthorfiction.com for determining whether information received via email is just that: true/false or fact/fiction. Both are excellent sites.

Advice from Snopes.com Very important!

1) Any time you see an E-Mail that says forward this on to ' 10 ' (or however many) of your friends, sign this petition, or you'll get bad luck, good luck, you'll see something funny on your screen after you send it, or whatever, it almost always has an E-Mail tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and E-Mails of those folks you forward to.

The host sender is getting a copy each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get lists of 'active ' E-Mail addresses to use in SPAM E-Mails, or sell to other spammers. Even when you get emails that demand you send the email on if you' re not ashamed of God/Jesus .....that's E-mail tracking and they' re playing on our conscience. These people don' t care how they get your email addresses - just as long as they get them. Also, emails that talk about a missing child or a child with an incurable disease "how would you feel if that was your child".... Email Tracking!!! Ignore them and don't participate!

2) Almost all E-Mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards. All it was, and all any of this type of E-Mail is, is a way to get names and cookie ' tracking information for telemarketers and spammers - - to validate active E-Mail accounts for their own profitable purposes.

You can do your Friends and Family members a GREAT favor by sending this information to them; you will be providing a service to your Friends, and will be rewarded by not getting thousands of spam E-Mails in the future!

Do yourself a favor and STOP adding your name(s) to those types of listings regardless how inviting they might sound!...or make you feel guilty if you

don' t!... it's all about getting email addresses - nothing more!

You may think you are supporting a GREAT cause, but you are NOT! Instead, you will be getting tons of junk mail later and very possibly a virus attached! Plus, we are helping the spammers get rich! Let's not make it easy for them!

Also: E-Mail petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress or any other organization - i.e. social security, etc.

To be acceptable, petitions must have a signed signature and full address of the person signing the petition, so this is a waste of time and you're just helping the Email trackers.

Barb's Accepted Paintings

Barbara Lang shared the photos of her paintings that were accepted into the APAA 2010 Winter Show. I think they are just super, especially the hollyhocks painting she started this summer at my motorhome!

Congratulations again, Barb...

From Barba Lang

I received the following note from Barbara Lang:

I am happy to say that Maggie Price (one of the top pastel teachers in the country) juried two of my paintings in to the Arizona Pastel Artists Assoc. winter show.
The show is the APAA Winter 2009 Juried Member Show at Sundust Gallery, 48 Main St Mesa, AZ Sat Feb 4 - Sat Feb 20.

I wish to add a personal note on this. One of Barb's paintings that was juried into this show was of hollyhocks. These hollyhocks were started from one of my reference photos while she and her husband, Charlie, visited us during our stay at a Chama, NM RV park last August. If you missed that post, click here. The other painting is of an Arroyo.

Way to go, Barb!

A note from Kandyce

Kandyce Olson sent me the following note on a beautiful card with one of her painting prints on the front. I will share her message, but I am keeping the card!

My apologies to Kandyce for not posting this sooner, but I was out of town and the card was waiting in our "hold mail" on our return.

Dear Vanguard,

I am very honored and encouraged to be named Artist of the Year by the Vanguard group.

I want to thank you for the recognition; and the acknowledgment inspires me to keep learning and improving. I appreciate the critiques that we can receive from Vanguard, and I plan to dedicate more time and intention to my work. Again, thank you for this honor.

Sincerely,
Kandyce Olson
